Our Maker

“For your maker is your husband – the Lord Almighty us His name – the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth.” Isaiah 54:5
I love this verse because it reminds me that I am loved and cherished by my Savior in heaven, even when I don’t feel that anyone cares here on earth. The first time I read this scripture I was going through the Bible study called “Falling in Love with Jesus.” As I studied its meaning the Lord gave me some precious insight that I have never forgotten.
First of all, He is my Maker, meaning, He formed every part of me. He knows what makes me happy, what makes me mad, what I enjoy, what drives me insane, etc. He made every single one of my emotions, and molded and shaped my heart according to His perfect plan. He knew that there would be times I would just want to cry or scream. He knew I would have days where I felt I just didn’t fit in, when I felt like the whole world was against me, or when no one even cared that I existed, much less had feelings of any kind. And because He so intricately created each detail of my life when I’m having one of those days He alone knows how to “fix” it. That’s why in the next part of the verse He goes on to say that HE is our husband. However, whether we are single or married, ultimately no one, no matter how godly of a man/woman they might be, can know how to perfectly bring comfort and healing like our heavenly bridegroom.
Just as we long to be held and protected by an earthly lover, so God longs to have us run to Him to meet all of our needs, because He alone can. The Lord gave me this illustration: if you had a broken watch that needed fixing, would you take it to a heart doctor? No! You would take it to a watch maker, because he is the one who put it together in the first place and knows how ever little part functions, and what will make it start working again properly. And so it is with God. So often, we run to the world to solve our problems, when all they offer are empty “quick fixes” that will only leave us as broken as we were before. We even run to other godly people relying on their advice to bind our wounds. Still, they cannot meet our needs like we so desperately long for them to be met, because they will never fully understand the inner workings of our heart. We must run to the One who so carefully and perfectly knit us together. He is tender. He is compassionate. He is gentle and loving. And more than anything, He knows. Run to Him first.
